enjoyment through someone’s delight

he cut a dragon fruit in two
and said I could take a piece.
I knew he was being kind but I could see he was very hungry
and although I was thirsty for a
bite,
I refused gratefully.

It was the first time
I actually got more enjoyment from looking at the way he ate
instead of tasting it myself.

and I knew,

that meant something.
